As I shuffled through the countless, heartbreaking pictures of the rescue efforts following Hurricane Katrina, one thing was clear - many of the animals caught in this massive catastrophe were in dire straights long before Katrina hit. If there was ever a sign that change, education and creative support services are needed - this was it. It's staggering to think that an animal can live in the lap of luxury (premium food, safe and comfortable environment, vet care, toys, love) and just a few miles away a dog can be left behind, chained to fence during a hurricane, without the slightest chance of survival.
Here is to closing the gap.
