If there was ever a sign that change, education and creative support services are needed - this was it. It's staggering to think that an animal can live in the lap of luxury (premium food, safe and comfortable environment, vet care, toys, love) and just a few miles away a dog can be left behind, chained to fence during a hurricane, without the slightest chance of survival.

Here is to closing the gap.

Light Bulb!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_a3hpETUroW8/SP4R58hOy7I/AAAAAAAAAHA/Njc_P1oUSiY/s320/jasper_evacsak.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259661102011042738" />
I went back to the original purpose of the Evacsak and found the logical color for the body of the bag - bright orange. I thought the blue top would be a nice contrast and discovered that a simple cord lock worked best to secure the top. I was at the end of my inventory of the first design so I quickly hunted down the new materials and got them over to the manufacturer in Portland. The orange and blue Evacsak ventured out into the world through an animal equipment supplier until 2008, at which point my company took over the manufacturing and distribution.

A Good Idea At The Time

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a3hpETUroW8/SP1wHq73YnI/AAAAAAAAAG4/1evdmI5TRE0/s320/cat_bag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259483216925385330" />

Black seemed like a good idea at the time as I was sure that the darker color would be more soothing, cave-like and protective. But what quickly became apparent was that a black bag, especially in the dark, would easily blend into the backdrop of chaos that is usually present during a disaster. In addition, the black bag heated up faster in the warmer temperatures which could add to the animal's stress. The wheel latch, that was responsible for keeping the bag closed, held up great so long as there was weight on in bag. But the moment the bag was placed to rest - the wheel latch was easily released.

So it was back to the drawing board.

The First Time Out In The World

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_a3hpETUroW8/SP1v0Ti_MsI/AAAAAAAAAGw/d-bcdy9P1V8/s320/black_kittens.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259482884229509826" />

United Animal Nations U.S.A Journal Fall 1993

EVACSAK - EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE ONE

During the flood in Missouri, we successfully tested a product that has just been introduced to the market. It is a black, rubberized mesh sack that measures 20 inches across and 24 inches deep. At the top is a draw string with a locking mechanism. The sack was used on the rescue boats in Missouri to transport kittens, cats and puppies. When rescuing from a boat, you are working within a limited space and the Evacsak took up a lot less room than the wire transfer cage.

If you are involved in any type of animal rescue work, we highly recommend the Evacsak. They are durable, the animal gets good ventilation and they are easy to clean. You may also consider having an Evacsak for all the animals living in your household. You never know when a disaster or an emergency may strike and this is a fast and effective way of removing your animal and transporting it safely. When not in use, it can be folded and stored in a drawer.
